WHAT IS APPEAR+? & WHY WE EXIST

Africa’s First Appearance Well-being App; Built From Real Lives

Appear+ (Appear Positive) is a digital well-being companion for Africans living with skin conditions, visible differences, and appearance-related challenges.

Whatever your journey, psoriasis, vitiligo, scars, eczema, burns, alopecia, acne… or being made to feel “not enough”, Appear+ helps you feel seen, supported, and strong.

But we’re not here to hand out empty “love yourself” slogans.

We offer real tools grounded in lived experience to support emotional & mental healing, appearance confidence, and social resilience.

Because this isn’t just self-care.
This is survival.

We exist because too many of us have been told:

“Pray harder.” “Cover it.” “You’ll get used to it.”
“It’s not that serious.” “Be grateful for life.”

But it is.

It’s serious when you’re passed over for a job.
It’s serious when a child stares and an adult laughs.
It’s serious when you stop showing up, in mirrors, in rooms, in life.
Appear+ was born from those silences.

From the 2 AM moments when stigma screams louder than words.
We’ve lived the pain, and we built the response.

This is our digital answer to a real-world problem:
A tool. A shield. A community. A voice.

From West Africa to East Africa, Central to Southern Africa, and everywhere in between, we are not waiting to be included. We are building what we never had.

Here at Appear+, we provide all the empowering tools and features listed below, as well as those still to come.

This isn’t just about inclusion. It’s a revolution in visibility, voice, and validation.

WHO IS APPEAR+ FOR?

Is Appear+ for You?

If you’ve ever been judged, stared at, or misunderstood because of how you look, Appear+ is for you.
From vitiligo, psoriasis, eczema, lupus, ichthyosis, and alopecia to scars, burns, or skin conditions, visible differences, appearance-related challenges you’re not alone. You’re seen here.

But here, you don’t have to shrink to fit in. You rise, supported.

This is an appearance-affirming transformation designed for African realities, guided by science, rooted in lived experience, and shaped by the soul.

WHY IT MATTERS

Globally, over 2 billion people live with visible differences. In Africa, silence is the loudest:

  • 84% have experienced isolation

  • 60% have had suicidal thoughts

  • 1 in 4 will face chronic mental health issues (Source: GlobalSkin, Changing Faces 2022)

But silence has been broken. In May 2025, the 78th World Health Assembly, a global resolution, finally acknowledged what we’ve always known:

“Skin conditions are not cosmetic.
They’re deeply connected to stigma, trauma, and systemic social exclusion.”

Officially recognised skin conditions as a global public health and psychosocial issue.

We’re no longer waiting to be seen; we’re building what we’ve never had.

Appear+ is Africa’s local answer to that global call.

OUR FOUNDER’S STORY

Built From the Skin In

At 14, a bangle left a blister that told me my skin wasn’t safe in the world, and thus the journey started. At 21, a beauty product cracked my face, and something inside me. Shame was passed off as advice.

Nine years later, when Vitiligo came unannounced, so did stares, the pity, the unsolicited cures, and the prayer suggestions. Some meant well. Most missed the point. I became a lesson, a warning, or a curiosity, anything but a person.

But over time, I stopped hiding. I started walking. First alone. Then with others. Today, Appear+ exists so no one else has to walk alone.

It’s not just an app. It’s a home for appearance confidence, psychosocial (social, emotional, and mental) well-being, and practical care.

Testimonial

🌟 Appear+ is my lived experience, turned into a lifeline. Not just as someone living with vitiligo, scars, and all the raw emotions that come with appearance anxiety, but as a woman who has walked through years of feeling unseen, judged, and misunderstood, just because of how I look. I once cried for a space that didn’t exist. A space to exhale. To be. To ask questions without shame. To not be “fixed” or preached at with cultural myths or religious guilt. To feel peace. To feel held. To just... feel like me again. Even people with the same condition didn’t always get it. It was lonely. Confusing. Loud inside. So I created the space I needed then. A space I wish I had 20 years ago. A soft, quiet, strong space. Rooted in our culture. Our truth. Our healing. Appear+ isn’t just an app. It’s a mirror that sees you. A digital companion that hears you. A soft rebellion against shame. A revolution in appearance and emotional well-being across Africa. Even if you're still hoping for a "cure", this space holds no judgment. Just this truth: You are already enough. You’ve always been. This is my love letter to anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and wondered if they mattered. To anyone who has ever hidden, or been hidden. You are seen. You are not alone. You belong here. 💛
